4-15 JUNE 2020
This trip to the South of France will focus on the new art/architecture and sculpture parks which have expanded exponentially in recent years. With breathtaking scenery and world-class collections, this area of France has become alive with dynamic and exciting new arts destinations. We will begin in Marseilles with VIP previews of the nomadic ‘MANIFESTA’ art fair, guided by French curator and author Marc Pottier. This fair will bring projects and installations to the region highlighting the social and cultural landscape of Provence. In Marseille we will also visit Le Corbusier’s powerful vision, Cité Radieuse, and architect Rudy Ciccotti’s fabulous new MuCEM. We will visit the new Friche Belle du Mai with its public installations and galleries, and several other museums and collections. Heading then to the countryside, we will stay at Maja Hoffman’s chic new hotel ‘L’Arlatan’ while visiting art sites in the region – starting with LUMA Arles Foundation for the Arts, Hoffman’s project complete with a Frank Gehry tower and Annabelle Selldorf complex. We will have a private reception at the Van Gogh Foundation, with drinks on the terrace at sunset, and tour many other sites and exhibitions. In Avignon, we will see the collection of Yvon Lambert, the former Paris art dealer and renowned collector, and in Aix-en-Provence we will savor Cezanne’s roots and discover the recently restored museum devoted to Vasarely. We will also learn about the Dora Maar House in Ménerbes, which hosts an artist’s residency program, and meet its Director Gwen Strauss. Then to Château la Coste, perhaps the most glamorous place in the South of France these days, with its elegant modern hotel and spa, active winery, and extensive art collection. Pavilions have been designed by Frank Gehry, Renzo Piano, Tadao Ando and Jean Nouvel for architectural pavilions as well as art by Tunga, Lee Ufan, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Alexander Calder, and more!). We will be able to enjoy two nights at the magnificent Villa La Coste, allowing for a luxurious full day of touring, relaxing, and taking in the extraordinary place. Finally we will visit the eastern section of Provence, exploring art sites like Domaine de Muy, founded by Jean-Gabriel Mitterrand, as well as the Villa Navarra, and the home and studio of artist Bernar Venet, with works from his own art collection including many contemporary artists and two spaces by James Turrell! We will take a day trip to the Îles d'Hyères to visit the remote and private Foundation Carmingnac, with its incredible subterranean museum and 15-acre sculpture park – featuring artists such as Francois-Xavier Lalanne, Niki de Saint Phalle, Frank Stella, Jean Tinguely, Lee Ufan, Bernar Venet, and Jean Dubuffet. Many other foundations, collections, art sites and artist studios will be included – intertwined with experiencing all the beauty Provence has to offer in its breathtaking scenery, warm culture, fine dining, wine tasting, and more. This tour will be lead by author and curator Marc Pottier, as well as Laura Worth of Art & Travel.
