For over a decade, Art & Travel has been organizing very special trips to Japan, staying in Tokyo, Kyoto, and the exclusive island of Naoshima, to explore the extraordinary art, culture, and cuisine this amazing country has to offer. Our Asian Art Curator, Amy Poster, will lead us through this culture-rich land, exploring the deep roots and long-standing traditions that have influenced the country’s burgeoning contemporary art scene. Starting in Tokyo, where we are privy to exclusive tours of private collections and museums, featuring both traditional and contemporary arts, and will visit sites for the upcoming Olympic Games, Summer 2020! We also take a trip to Hiroshi Sugimoto’s breathtaking Enoura Observatory, with its stunning gardens and light tunnels overlooking the Pacific Ocean. From Tokyo we fly to the islands, visiting the home and studio of Isamu Noguchi, then the famed art islands of Naoshima, Teshima, and Inujima! With an exclusive stay, we explore not only the many independent art installations throughout, but also the stunning architectural creations of Tadao Ando, whose studio we visit in Osaka. In Kyoto we explore the forests, gardens, and shrines of the ancient city, participate in traditional ceremonies, learn more about traditional arts and crafts, and venture to the I.M. Pei Miho Museum, in a stunning mountainous setting with one of the world’s most exclusive private collections. A trip truly extraordinary in every element. This trip will be lead by Amy Poster, curator emeritus of the Brooklyn Museum of Art and consulting curator at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; as well as Laura Worth of Art & Travel and Mari Ueno-Phillippi, head of Art & Travel: Japan.
